Lymphatic System
A network involved in immune responses and fluid balance, consisting of lymph, lymph nodes, and lymphatic vessels.
Antigens
Foreign bodies such as bacteria, viruses, and toxins that trigger an immune response.
Immunocompetent Cells
Cells that can recognize and respond to antigens; includes T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes, and macrophages.
T-Lymphocytes
A type of white blood cell that plays a central role in cell-mediated immunity.
B-Lymphocytes
A type of white blood cell that produces antibodies in response to antigens.
Macrophage
A type of immune cell that engulfs and digests cellular debris and pathogens.
Primary Lymphatic Nodule
Aggregated small lymphocytes that appear dark due to heterochromatic nuclei.
Secondary Lymphatic Nodule
A lymphatic nodule with a dark periphery and a central light germinal center containing lymphoblasts.
Tonsils
Aggregated lymphatic nodules in the pharynx that produce lymphocytes and antibodies.
Peyer's Patches
Aggregated lymphatic nodules located in the ileum, involved in immune response.
Lymph Node
An oval encapsulated lymphoid organ responsible for filtering lymph and producing immune responses.
Spleen
An organ that filters blood, produces antibodies, and supports lymphocyte production.
Red Pulp
The part of the spleen that consists of blood-filled sinuses and splenic cords, involved in filtering blood.
White Pulp
The lymphatic tissue in the spleen associated with the immune response, includes lymphatic nodules and perifollicular sheaths.
Hemal Nodes
Small lymphoid organs along blood vessels in ruminants, potential accessory organs for blood filtration.
Thymus
A bilobed organ where T-lymphocytes mature, consisting of a cortex and medulla.
Hassal's Corpuscles
Structures in the thymus medulla formed from dead reticulo-epithelial cells, involved in T-cell differentiation.
