Population Density
The number of people living per unit area of land.
Highlands
Regions of land that are elevated, typically above 1,500 meters, and often have a denser population in Ethiopia.
Crude Birth Rate
The number of live births per 1,000 people in a given year.
Demographic Transition Model (DTM)
A model that describes the stages of population growth as a country develops economically.
Fertility Rate
The average number of children born to a woman over her lifetime.
Infant Mortality Rate
The number of deaths of infants under one year old per 1,000 live births.
Internal Migration
The movement of people within a country from one region to another.
Push Factor
A negative aspect or condition that motivates one to leave a location.
Pull Factor
A positive aspect or condition that attracts people to a new location.
Dependency Ratio
A measure of the ratio of dependents (aged 0-14 and over 65) to the working-age population.
Urbanization
The process by which more of a population comes to live in urban areas.
Optimal Population
The population size that maximizes per capita welfare or economic output.
Family Planning
The practice of controlling the number and spacing of children born to a family.
Population Policy
A governmental strategy aimed at managing the population size and growth.
Life Expectancy
The average number of years a person is expected to live based on current mortality rates.
Substance Farming
Agricultural practice focused on growing enough food to feed oneself and one's family.
Informal Sector
Economic activities that occur outside of formal regulations and taxation.
Sustainable Development
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations.
Census
An official count or survey of a population, typically recording various details about individuals.
Demographic Indicators
Statistics that provide insights into the characteristics of a population, such as age, sex, and economic status.
Rural-Urban Remittances
Money sent back home by migrants working in urban areas.
