Ground Fire
Fires that burn undergrowth at ground level or surface.
Surface Fires
Types of fires that burn the surface layer including grass, weeds, brush, and shrubs.
Crown Fires
Fires that burn the tops of trees and high brush.
Spot Fires
Fires started in advance of the heads or bits of embers that can start new fires.
Fire Head
The point where the fire line is progressing.
Fire Flanks
The fire line area between the tail and head of the fire, usually burning slower.
Fire Perimeter
The outer boundary of a fire, marking the area affected by the fire.
