archetype

An ideal example or model after which other things are patterned. It is what is considered a typical example of a thing or person. In literature, there are situation archetypes, setting archetypes, symbolic archetypes and character archetypes. These appeal in a universal way to the unconscious and evoke strong responses

Ex: Character archetype: The Hero, The Villain

Setting: A Garden Symbolic: use of specific color (i.e. green=greed, or life), or water symbolizes cleansing

A symbolic representation: The blindfolded figure with scales is an allegory of justice. - a representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms. The purpose of an allegory is to teach an idea or principle, or to explain an idea or principle. It is the extension of a metaphor throughout the text that epitomizes an allegory (i.e. The Lion in Wizard of Oz represents courage, the Mocking Jay pin from Hunger Games represents hope/strength/fight, as does Katniss)
