Relational Chicano Studies
Idea of studying chic. Exp. Through their relationships w/ other comm. And their histories
Ex: Alvarez- examines conn. between chic. and black cult. mvmts. showing how idens. = formed through interaction, solidarity rather and isolation
Latinidad
Broad iden. connecting ppl. of lat. Am. descent while recognizing diff. among them.
Ex: Lecture (bad bunny): created moment of lat. visibility that many diff. lat. am. communicates could identify with while venturing PR culture
Transnational obstinate memories
Memories that persist across borders/ continue shaping identity despite migration
Ex: osuna- shows how Salvadoran mig. continue carrying mems. of civil war, migration, and displacement even after settling in US.
Rasquache mapping
Documenting marginalized histories using overlooked, fragmented, and non-traditional resources
Ex: Santizo- uses oral histories, family archives, community mems. and everyday materials to document central am. Exp. often absent from official archives
Testimonio
Personal narrative that tells truth ab. oppression and centers marg. voices
Ex: Cruz-Malavé: examines testimonios from LGBTQ+ Lat. indiv. whose personal stories challenge dominant narratives/ reveal experiences of exclusion/ resistance
Theory in the flesh
Knowledge and theory that emerge from lived experiences
Ex: Cruz-Malavé- mentions Cherrí Moraga in which we learn her feminist/queer critiques from her exp. as a chic. woman, navigating race, gender, sexuality and class
Imagined mobility
Ability to feel connected to distant places through media when physical travel = impossible
Ex: Vazquez- Ruiz: Undocumented Zapotec migrants watch YouTube “Mobil Postcards” of San Dionisio Octepec to virtually visit hometowns
Chicanafuturism
Genre/way of thinking that uses Sci-Fi, tech, and imaginiñation to explore chic. exp. and challenges colonial histories (imagines chic./lat. thriving and surviving)
Ex: Ramirez- discussed chic. artists who combine indig. histories, tech, and speculative futures to imagine worlds when mex-am thrive and survive
Decolonial imagery
Reimagining history by challenging colonial viewpoints and recovering marginalized voices
Ex: Pérez- argues that chic./ queer wmn. have been excluded from historical accounts so Pérez reinterprets borderlands history to uncover their experiences
Borderlands
Both the physical US-mex border and the in-between space where identities, cultures, and experience overlap
Ex: Anzaldúa- describes living between mex and am. Cultures and feeling neither fully accepted by one nor the other
Brokered Latinization
Creation of lat. spaces through collaborations between planners, developers, architects, and policy makers
Ex: Lodoño- explains how commercial developments market themselves to Lat. consumers by incorporating Latino culture symbol and aesthetics into sub. shop centers/public spaces
Magical urbanism
Process through which Latinos transform cities through culture, businesses, and common life
Ex: Davis- describes Latino imm. reshaping LA through street vendors, businesses, murals, festivals, that make city distinctly Latino
Right to the city
Idea that everyone = right to access, shape and belong in urban and suburban spaces
Ex: Carpio- Says Latino activists in Maywood fought anti-imm. measures/ claimed their right to belong in and shape suburb, demonstrating right to city
Cartographic memory
The way memory is tied to places/ how maps highlight histories while overlooking others
Ex: Herrera- says former chic. activists used places like Clínica de la raza in fruitvale to remember/ map lasting impact of chic. mvmt’s activism on community
Solidarity aesthetics
Images created to raise awareness and support Central American struggles during periods of conflict
Ex: Cornejo- discussed posters and visual materials produced during civil war that circulated internationally to gain support for Central American communities affected by violence and displacement
Visual discourse
How images, symbols, and visual designs communicated cultural, political and social imagery
Ex: Cornejo- “Molotov Man” photo shows rebel fighter to communicate ideas of resistance, revolution and political struggle against US (Pepsi bottle as bomb)
Rasquachismo
DIY aesthetic → reuses/repurposed everyday materials (rooted in working class chicano culture)
Ex: Villaseñor-Black- Amalia Mesa-Bains= artists create installations using ofrendas, family photos, mirrors, etc., to celebrate chicano identity
