New cards

what is photosynthesis?

It is the process plants use to make food.

2
New cards

what is the equation for photosynthesis?

Carbon dioxide + water (in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll) oxygen + glucose

3
New cards

How does a plant obtain its food?

Plants absorb water from the soil through their roots and carbon dioxide from the air through the stomata. Inside the leaf the green pigment chlorophyll traps sunlight. The light energy is then used to change the water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose, and finally oxygen is released into the air.

4
New cards

where does photosynthesis happen?

In the chloroplasts

5
New cards

Why is carbon dioxide important in plants?

Because it is a reactant in photosynthesis, and it produces oxygen and glucose.

6
New cards

what is combustion?

it is the burning of fossil fuels into the air.

7
New cards

What are the key parts of the carbon cycle/

1.Combustion

2.photosynthesis

3.respiration

8
New cards

List 3 impacts of climate change

1.Rising sea levels

2.air quality deterioration

3.hotter temperatures

9
New cards

What is benedict’s regrant?

It is used to find the amount of reducing sugar.

10
New cards

what does a positive result after using benedict’s regrant look like?

if the color of the solution goes from blue to brick red.

11
New cards

What is the test for starch?

Iodine test

12
New cards

Magnesium in photosynthesis:

It is needed to make the green pigment chlorophyll

13
New cards

State the function of each of these structures in a leaf:

1.Chloroplasts

2.Spongy mesophyll cells

3.Waxy cuticle

4.Stomata

5.upper epidermis

6.Guard cells

Chloroplasts:

organelle which is the site of photosynthesis

Spongy cells:

Allows for the diffusion of gases through the leaf

Waxy cuticle:

Water proofs the leaf

Stomata;

Openings on the upper side of the leaf that allow for the exchange of gases.

upper epidermis:

Covering of the leaf to protect it

Guard cells:

open and closes the stomata

14
New cards

How do we know when photosynthesis has happened?

If the solution turns brick red after using benedict’s regrant or if oxygen bubbles appear in the flask.

15
New cards

Nitrate in photosynthesis:

nitrate contains nitrogen atoms which is used to convert carbohydrates into proteins which are used for growth.
