m-Staphylococcus Broth
A selective medium that allows for the growth of Staphylococcus species.
Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA)
A selective and differential medium used to isolate and differentiate Staphylococcus species based on mannitol fermentation.
Staphylococcus Medium 110
A medium advantageous for selective isolation of Staphylococcus species; differs from MSA in its formulation and selective agents.
Blood Agar
A rich medium used to detect hemolysis patterns in bacteria.
Beta hemolysis
Complete lysis of red blood cells, resulting in a clear zone around bacterial colonies.
Alpha hemolysis
Partial lysis of red blood cells, resulting in a greenish or brownish discoloration around bacterial colonies.
Gamma hemolysis
No lysis of red blood cells, observed as no change in the medium around bacterial colonies.
Coagulase Test
A diagnostic test used to determine the presence of coagulase enzyme, differentiating Staphylococcus aureus as positive.
Novobiocin Susceptibility Test
A test to determine resistance or susceptibility of Staphylococcus species to the antibiotic novobiocin.
Streptococcus
A genus of bacteria characterized by Gram-positive cocci that form chains.
Catalase Test
A test to determine the presence of the enzyme catalase that breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
Bacitracin Test
A sensitivity test used to identify Streptococcus pyogenes, which is susceptible to bacitracin.
Optochin Test
A susceptibility test used to differentiate Streptococcus pneumoniae from other alpha-hemolytic Streptococci.
Bile Esculin Agar
A medium used to identify organisms that can hydrolyze esculin in the presence of bile.
Salt Tolerance Test
A test to determine the ability of an organism to grow in a high-salt environment.
