What is imagery?
Descriptive language appealing to the senses.
Why do writers use imagery?
to create vivid mental pictures, appeal to the reader's senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) to evoke emotions, deepen understanding, build atmosphere, and make the story more immersive, memorable, and engaging by "showing" rather than just "telling"
What is alliteration?
The repetition of the same beginning sound in two or more words.
Why do writers use alliteration?
It can create rhythm and melody, following a certain stress pattern. It can build a mood or set the scene depending on the letters that are used
What is sibalance?
Repetition of "s" or "sh" sounds.
Why do writers use sibalance?
Soft, sinister, or hissing tone depending on context
What is enjambed imagery?
Imagery stretched over multiple lines.
Why do writers use enjambed imagery?
Emphasises overwhelming emotions or movement. to manipulate the reader's pace, create emotional tension, generate surprise or ambiguity, and draw specific attention to unexpected words or phrases
What are semantic fields?
a group of words related by a common theme, concept, or subject
Why do writers use semantic fields?
Strengthens the poem's focus and emotional direction.
What is an extended metaphor?
A metaphor developed across several lines or the whole poem
Why do writers use extended metaphor?
Creates layered meaning; helps convey central themes.
What is tone?
The poet's attitude (angry, reflective, nostalgic).
Why do writers use tone?
Influences how the reader emotionally responds
What is the atmosphere?
The emotional feeling created.
