Define Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme inhibitors ("pril")

block the body's production of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a hormone that circulates in the blood and has many effects on the cardiovascular system; its main role is to constrict blood vessels.

Uses for ACE inhibitors

hypertension and heart failure

ACE inhibitors side effects

Dry cough, (increases K+ which can cause muscle cramps), hypotension, Angioedema

ACE Inhibitors Interactions

Drugs that increase potassium levels (spironolactone, ARBs)

Chronic kidney disease (more prone to increase potassium)

ACE inhibitors Contraindications

Pregnancy, Prior angioedema (swelling of areas of tissue under the skin)
