2 barrier towels

3 washclothes

Female Catheter Care – What is the FIRST step? opening procedure

1. knock

2. introduce yourself

3. hand hygiene

4. privacy curtain

5. explain procedure

6. check name band

7. lock wheels of bed

8. raise bed

Female Catheter Care – After raising the bed, what is the next step?

fill up basin with warm water

Female Catheter Care – After filling the basin, what is the next step?

test water and have resident test water

Female Catheter Care – After testing water, what is the next step?

put on gloves

After putting on gloves do what?

Expose the area surrounding the catheter, ONLY exposing resident between hip and knee.

After exposing area, what do you do?

place barrier towel beneath hips (or chuck)

Female Catheter Care – After placing chuck, what is the next step?

prepare washcloth with soap and water; verbalize: i’m holding the catheter by meatus and not tugging

Female Catheter Care – After holding the catheter, what is the next step?

While holding catheter, clean at least 4 inches down the tube using strokes. verbalize: cleaning AWAY from the urethra. (Use a clean portion of washcloth for each stroke)

Female Catheter Care – After cleaning the drainage tube with soap and water, what is the next step?

clean with just water (rinse)

Female Catheter Care – After rinsing the drainage tube, what is the next step?

pat dry

Female Catheter Care – After patting dry, what is the next step?

remove barrier towel (ask them to lift their hips) and dispose (or place in laundry)

Female Catheter Care – After removing and disposing barrier towel, what is the next step?

place sheets/bedding back on resident

Female Catheter Care – After putting sheets back on resident, what’s next?

Empty basin; dump, rinse, dump, rinse, dry

Female Catheter Care – After drying equipment, what is the next step?

Return equipment to storage.

Remove gloves
