Demography
The study of statistics relevant to the population, including the number of births and deaths and the prevalence of disease, which impacts on the structure of the human population.
Crude birth rate
The annual number of live births per thousand people.
General fertility rate
The annual number of live births per 1000 women of childbearing age, often taken to be from 15 to 49 years old.
Crude death rate
The annual number of deaths per 1000 people.
Infant mortality rate
The annual number of deaths of children less than 1 year old per 1000 live births.
Expectation of life (Life expectancy)
The average number of years people in the population are expected to live.
NISRA
The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, which contains the Census Office responsible for carrying out the Census of Population.
Census of Population
A statistical survey undertaken by law normally every ten years; the most recent took place on Sunday 21 March 2021.
Mild to moderate spectrum
The segment of individuals with learning disabilities who were previously undocumented but are now captured by widened, modern diagnostic definitions.
Neonatal intensive care (NICU)
Advanced medical care utilizing high-tech ventilators and surfactant therapy to allow infants with extreme prematurity or complex conditions to survive the birth process.
Neonatal period
The first 28 days of an infant's life.
NIPT and Amniocentesis
Advancements in prenatal screening tests that allow for the early and accurate identification of genetic or chromosomal conditions linked to learning disabilities.
Heel prick test
A post-birth neonatal check used alongside prenatal screening to improve the understanding and diagnosis of disorders.
Annual Health Checks
Proactive screenings for secondary conditions, such as respiratory infections or heart defects, provided to individuals with learning disabilities to extend life expectancy.
Care in the community
A shift from large, isolated institutions to supported living, which has improved the nutrition, mental well-being, and longevity of service users.
Personal Independence Payments (PIP)
A type of ring-fenced funding that requires a formal medical diagnosis as a "passport" for access.
Statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN)
A formal diagnosis in the education system that triggers additional funding for classroom assistants and specialist resources.
Mencap NI and Autism NI
Support groups that spread public knowledge, encouraging parents to recognize developmental milestones and seek early medical advice.
Down Syndrome life expectancy
A metric that has increased from 10–25 years in the 1960s-80s to nearly 60 years old today.
Health Action Plans
Tailored nutrition and care settings that address historical issues like malnutrition or obesity-related complications for individuals with learning disabilities.
