Uniqueness
The characteristics that make a person special or different from anyone else.
Self-awareness
The state of knowing yourself thoroughly, including interests, skills, strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, goals, wishes, values, and beliefs.
Strengths
Things that you naturally do well, including qualities and abilities that make a person successful.
Weaknesses
Qualities that limit a person from completing a specific task effectively.
Self-image
How a person feels about themselves, how much they like themselves, and how they perceive themselves.
Self-development
The process and methods by which an individual tries to improve themselves.
KLETS
An acronym for communication tips: Calm (K), Listen (L), Similar interests (E), Talents (T), and Smile (S).
Respect
Accepting someone despite differences such as race, gender, interests, talents, culture, and religion.
Power
Having control over a person or environment; the ability to get things according to your own will.
Power relations
The sharing of power between two people in a relationship; unhealthy versions involve one person dominating and controlling the other.
Masculinity
Refers to the male gender and acting like a man, including typical expected behaviors.
Femininity
Refers to the female gender and acting like a woman, including typical expected behaviors.
Gender
Socially constructed characteristics of women, men, girls, and boys, including behaviors and roles learned rather than biological.
Stereotype
Judging a group of people based on a single quality or trait.
GBV (Geslagsgebaseerde Geweld)
Gender-Based Violence; increasing in South Africa due to factors like lack of education, poverty, and drug abuse.
Sexual Abuse
Inappropriate or incorrect touching of a sexual nature that causes discomfort or involves being forced into sexual acts.
Physical Health
The bodily health of a person, including fitness levels and the absence of disease.
Mental Health
A state of emotional, behavioral, and social maturity where a person functions normally in society.
Cardiovascular fitness
Having a strong heart and large lung capacity; improved by activities like walking or running.
Muscle strength
Strong muscles that reduce the likelihood of developing back pain or other injuries; improved by weight lifting or swimming.
Endurance
The ability to exercise for long periods without becoming tired.
Flexibility
The ability to move joints comfortably and use muscles optimally, preventing muscle pain.
Endorphins
Feel-good hormones released during physical activity that improve mood and energy levels.
Cortisol
A hormone released during physical exercise that helps individuals manage stress.
Self-knowledge
The understanding of your unique being, interests, and personality, constructed by social, cultural, and environmental influences.
Work
A service provided at an agreed price where a person is employed and paid, sometimes requiring basic training.
Profession
Work that typically requires special training or skills, such as a doctor or editor.
Career Field
A grouping of professions that require similar skills and knowledge, classified to help individuals narrow down choices.
Career
An occupation followed for a large portion of life that offers development, promotions, and salary increases.
Abilities
Natural and intrinsic skills used to perform observable activities, not necessarily resulting from formal instructions.
Talents
Innate natural aptitudes or good skills that emerge effortlessly, heavily influenced by genes.
NSS (National Senior Certificate)
The Grade 12 certificate in South Africa requiring completion of 7 subjects: 4 compulsory and 3 electives from Grades 10 to 12.
Compulsory NSS Subjects
The four required subjects: Two official languages, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, and Life Orientation.
SMART Criteria
A goal-setting framework: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound.
Bursary
An amount of money given to a student based on need or academic/sport merit for studies that does not require repayment.
Student Loan
Money borrowed from a bank for studies that must be repaid with interest after completing the qualification.
Apprenticeship (Vakleerlingskap)
A program where one earns money while learning theory and practical skills, leading to a qualification.
Occupational Stereotype
A preconceived attitude about a certain occupation or one's own suitability for it based on unfair beliefs.
Bill of Rights
A constitutional document communicating the human rights that all South Africans must follow by law.
Fair Discrimination
Treating people differently to correct past injustices or balance society, such as BBEEE or representative sport teams.
Unfair Discrimination
Unequal or abusive treatment based on unreasonable prejudice, such as sexism or racism.
CEDAW
The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, an international bill of rights for women.
Xenophobia
Treating foreigners as if they have no right to live or work in the country.
