A landmass stretching south into the Mediterranean Sea where Ancient Rome developed in central Italy.
Latium Plains
A region in central Italy where several early Latin communities lived and where the city of Rome was founded.
Mediterranean Sea
The sea surrounding the Italian peninsula, providing Rome with access to interact with different cultures and trade networks.
Tiber River
A river flowing from the Apennines westward through Rome into the Mediterranean Sea, providing fresh water, fertile soil, and a transportation route.
The Alps
A mountain range forming a natural barrier along the northern edge of the Italian peninsula that helped protect it from invasions from northern Europe.
The Apennine Mountains
Mountains running down the centre of the peninsula that divide it but are lower and easier to cross than the mountains of Greece.
Po River and Arno River
Important rivers that created fertile agricultural areas and supported many early settlements across the Italian peninsula.

A climate characterized by warm to hot, dry summers; mild and wetter winters; and long growing seasons.
