Context (The "AP-CHAT" method): State the Author, Purpose, Context, Historical background, Audience, and Tone.
Defensible Thesis: State exactly how the author persuades their audience and why they do it.
Formula: In [Text Type] by [Author], [Author鈥檚 Name] uses [Rhetorical Strategy 1] and [Rhetorical Strategy 2] to [Verb/Achieve the primary purpose] for [Target Audience]. [1]

Focus on the first major strategy the author uses to establish their argument.
Topic Sentence: Identify the author's strategy in the first section and connect it to the thesis.
Embed Evidence: Introduce a specific, concise quote or paraphrase. Do not summarize!
Commentary & Analysis (The most important part!):
Dissect specific words (diction) and their connotation.
Explain how this device affects the audience (e.g., evokes guilt, inspires action, builds trust).
Answer: Why does the author need to use this specific device right now?

Focus on the second half of the passage鈥攐ften where the author makes a pivot, appeals to logic/emotion, or issues a call to action.
Topic Sentence: State the new strategy used in the latter half of the text and how it connects to the author's purpose.
Embed Evidence: Pull a key piece of text from the latter half.
Commentary & Analysis: Analyze the shift. How did the audience's mindset change from the first part to this second part, and why does this new strategy work?
conclusion
Restate Thesis: Rephrase your thesis in a new way (do not copy it word-for-word).
Broaden the Context: Briefly explain the "so what?"鈥攚hy does this text matter in the grand scheme of the broader historical or cultural context?
