Entering (Level 1)
Pictorial or graphic representations of content-area language; words/phrases/chunks when given one-step commands, directions, WH-, choice, or yes/no questions with sensory/graphic/support; oral language with errors that often impede meaning in basic oral commands or simple statements with support.
Beginning (Level 2)
General language related to content areas; phrases or short sentences; oral or written language with phonological, syntactic, or semantic errors that often impede meaning when given one- or multi-step commands, directions, questions, or a series of statements with sensory/graphic/interactive support.
Developing (Level 3)
General and some specific language of the content areas; expanded sentences in oral interaction or written paragraphs; language with errors that may impede communication but retain much of its meaning when presented with descriptions with sensory/graphic/interactive support.
Expanding (Level 4)
Specific and some technical language of the content areas; a variety of sentence lengths with differing linguistic complexity in oral discourse or connected writing; minimal errors that do not impede overall meaning when supported by sensory/graphic/interactive materials.
Bridging (Level 5)
Specialized or technical language of the content areas; a variety of sentence lengths and linguistic complexity in extended oral or written discourse (stories, essays, or reports); oral or written language approaching comparability to English-proficient peers with grade-level material.
Reaching (Level 6)
Specialized or technical language reflective of content areas at grade level; a variety of sentence lengths of varying linguistic complexity in extended oral or written discourse; oral or written communication in English comparable to English-proficient peers.
