What does a chemical formula tell us?
Shows the number and type of atoms in a unit of a compound.
What is an ion?
A charged particle sthat has either more of less electrons than protons.
Differentiate between a cation and an anion
Cations are atoms that lost electrons and Anions are atoms that gained electrons.
What is a molecule?
Neutral particles that form from covalent bonding
What is the difference between a polar bond and a non polar bond?
A polar bond does not share equally. A non polar bond shares electrons equally.
What determines how elements share the electrons between them in a covalent bond?
Larger atoms=stronger pull, charge on the nucleus, total number of electrons
What is an oxidation number?
The + or - number that tells you how many electrons the atom gained, lost , or shared to become stable
In an ionic compound, the oxidation number is the name as…
the charge of the ion
What is a polyatomic ion? Give 2 examples
A + or - charged group of atoms covalently bonded, that act as a single unit. Na2SO4, Mg(OH)2
Metal with a nonmetal
Ionic
Nonmetal with a nonmetal
covalent
Atoms give and take electrons
Ionic
Atoms form charged ions
Ionic
Electrons are shared between elements
covalent
