Augustus
Adopted son of Julius Caesar and first emperor of Rome. He restored peace and prosperity to the Empire and began the era known as the Pax Romana.

Citizenship
Membership in a political community that brings with it both rights and responsibilities.

Constantine
This Roman emperor allowed Christians to worship freely, and moved the capital of the empire from Rome to Byzantium

Julius Caesar
A popular military hero and the most famous Roman dictator. Was named "dictator for life" in 44 B.C. and was assassinated in 41 B.C.

Pax Romana
A period of peace and prosperity in Rome that started around 27 B.C. and ended in about A.D. 180

Republic
A government in which citizens have the right to vote and elect officials.

Atilla the Hun
Leader of the Huns and known as the "scourge of God" he terrorized Rome's borders and led his troops deep into Gaul and Italy.

Justinian Code
A compilation of Roman civil laws collected and organized by order of the Byzantine emperor Justinian around A.D. 534.

Schism
a formal split within a religious organization; any division or separation of a group or organization into hostile factions

Patriarch
positions of dominance and privilege primarily held by men; the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line.
