'Passes' Act
A law requiring all African men, and later women, to carry 'reference' or 'pass' books to control their movement between rural and urban areas.
Group Areas Act
A law that set aside specific residential and business areas for particular races, resulting in many people being forced to move.
Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act
A law that forbade marriages between black and white people.
Immorality Act
A law that made it illegal for black and white people to have sexual relations with each other.
National Party
The political organization that came into power in 1948 and built upon existing laws to strengthen the apartheid system.
Separate Amenities Act
A law that segregated public facilities such as beaches, parks, and toilets, ensuring whites were allowed to use the best amenities.
The Suppression of Communism Act and Terrorism Act
Laws used to ban political organizations disliked by the National Party and allow for the arrest, detention, and torture of individuals without trial.
Bantu Education Act
A law that provided black children with an inferior education involving under-resourced facilities, subjects, and funding compared to white children.
Bantu Self-Government Act
A law that established a system of 'homelands' or 'Bantustans' for Africans.
Population Registration Act
A law that classified all South Africans into racial categories: Europeans (whites), coloureds, Indians, and Africans.
