Chytridiomycota
AKA chytrids, are considered the most primitive fungi, primarily aquatic and unique in producing flagellated, motile gametes and zoospores.
Zygomycota
AKA conjugated fungi. Known for forming bread and fruit molds, produce sexual zygospores within a thick-walled zygosporangium.
Ascomycota
AKA sac fungi. The largest group of fungi, characterized by producing sexual spores (ascospores) inside specialized sacs called asci, including yeasts, truffles, and Penicillium.
Basidiomycota
AKA club fungi. Referred to as 'higher fungi,' produce spores on a club-shaped structure called a basidium, typically found on showy fruiting bodies like mushrooms and puffballs.
Glomeromycota
A recently defined phylum comprising fungi that form arbuscular mycorrhizae, crucial symbiotic relationships with the roots of most terrestrial plants.
