What materials are required when flying
Medical, pilots cert, government issued ID, logbook for carrying passengers
Compensation vs reimbursement
Compensation is anything of value received by the pilot. Reimbursement is returning money to the pilot (pro rata)
Can you legally takeoff with frost on your wings and why
No it is illegal (92.527)
What are the qualifications needed to apply for a commercial license
18 MEETHS. At least 18 years old, medical (3rd class to take test, 2nd class to use comm privileges), English, endorsement from CFI, CAX test, hold PPL
Privileges and limitations of a commercial pilot
Can carry people or property and act as PIC for compensation or hire. Limited to not flying at night or 50 nm or more without an instrument rating
1st class medical duration
Under 40 = 12 months. Over 40 = 6 months
2nd class medical duration
12 months regardless of age
3rd class medical duration
Under 40 = 60 months. Over 40 = 24 months
Can you get a commercial license on Basic med?
Yes but you cannot excersize the privileges unless you have a 2nd class
What is common carriage
Defined by holding out of a willingness to transport persons or property from place to place for compensation or hire
What is private carriage
Carriage for hire that does not involve holding out. Involves transporting persons or property for usually 1-3 selected customers (not for public)
What is holding out
Representing yourself or carrier to the public (advertising)
When can you fly right away with your commercial license
119.1 E = Airlines, charters, instructing, banner towing, crop dusting
What is MMEL
Master minimum equipment list, list of all equipment that can be inop across an entire aircraft type
What is MEL
Made from MMEL specific to tail number for equipment that can be inop for flight.
MEL in depth definition
Repetitive information to reassure the PIC about unnecessary equipment to fly for increased redundancy. Helpful for pilots who fly different planes or different types of planes because they allow the PIC to have a consistent list to go to
Required inspections of flight
Annual every 12 months, vor check every 30 days, 100 hour inspection for compensation or hire, altimeter static every 24 monhts, transponder every 24 months, ELT inspection every 12 months. Needs to be replaced after 1 hour of cumulative use, or 50% battery life.
If the ELT is at half its battery life, but it's been inspected less than a year ago, what do you need to do with the ELT
Replace is
Can you overfly an annual and by how much?
No you cant, need ferry permit
Can you overfly a 100 hour inspection and if so how much
Yes by up to 10 hours only if aircraft is enroute to a maintenance facility to have the inspection performed. If over, need a ferry permit
What is a ferry permit, when do you get one, where do you get one
Permit allowing unairworthy aircraft to overfly inspection timelines fly for a specific purpose such as maintenance or bad weather emergencies from the FSDO
Oxygen requirements for non pressurized aircraft
12,500 - 14,000 msl = crew must use after 30 minutes. 14,000 - 15,000 msl = crew must continuously use. 15,000 + msl = crew must use and passengers must be supplied O2
Oxygen requirements for pressurized aircraft
Above FL250 = 10 minute supply per pax. Above FL350 = pilot must wear if only one in the cockpit, or 1 must wear if both don’t have quick don masks
Different types of hypoxia
ABCD. A = air, hypoxic not enough O2 in the body. B = blood, anemic/hypemic, blood cant transport O2. C = circulation, stagnant, O2 rich blood not moving. D = drugs, histoxic, cells cant use O2
Requirements of a pressurized cabin
A constant flow of air comes in and out of the cabin to regulate air pressure through a completely sealed aircraft
Are TAFs and METARs ceilings reported in AGL or MSL
AGL
What height is used on a sectional
MSL
What are TAFs
Terminal aerodrome forecast, provide weather forecast/prediction within 5 SM of an airport, issued 4 times a day (every 6 hours) valid for 24-30 hours used for flight planning
SIGMET vs AIRMET
Signifigant meteorological information vs airmen’s meteorological information. AIRMETs are for GA aircraft and provide information regarding moderate hazards. SIGMETS are for all aircraft regarding hazardous weather
How often are AIRMETs released and how long are they valid for
Issued every 6 hours and valid for 6 hours
How often are SIGMETs released and how long are they valid for
Issued as needed valid for 4 hours
SIGMET weather
DATI. Dust/sandstorm, volcanic ash, turbulence, icing
Convective SIGMET weather
SHELT. Surface wind greater than 50 kts, hail greater than ¾ inch in diameter, embedded thunderstorms, line of thunderstorms/squall line, tornados
How often are convective SIGMETs released and how long are they valid for
Issued 55 minutes past the hour valid for 2 hours
How can you get in flight weather information
FSS, 122.2. Approach
Primary flight controls
Ailerons, rudder, elevator
Secondary flight controls
Flaps and trim
Spin recovery
REAP, rudder opposite of spin, elevator forward, ailerons neutral, power idle
Can you fly with frost on the wings
No, disrupts airflow over the wing creating less lift,
