What is the definition of training?
The process of increasing the knowledge and skills of the workforce to allow them to complete their jobs more efficiently
Why is training important?
Increase quality, decrease waste,, efficiently, good customer service, can do jobs that are best of their ability, motivate, flexibility, helpful with recruiting
What is induction training and what is commonly included?
Training completed when a worker start at a new business or in a new job role
Introduction to the workplace, colleagues, health and safety training, tour of the workplace
What is on the job training and and ways it takes place
Training given in the workplace directly by the employer it is often described as learning by doing where unemployment is shown or taught how to complete tasks by a more experienced worker.
Mentoring, shadowing, job rotation, graduate training schemes
What is off the job training and examples?
Training takes place away from the work place, collagen university courses, online courses, external training providers
What is an apprenticeship?
Formal agreements between an employer and an employee that commits the employer to facilitate training and workplace experience for the employee. This will lead to a recognise qualification that is accepted throughout the relevant industry.
Advantages and disadvantages of on the job training
Advantages
Better feel for the job, convenience so saves time.
Disadvantages.
More white cloth, the employee, potential for slower customer service
Advantages and disadvantages of off the job training
Advantages
Working separate from learning, flexible, new ideas inputted.
Disadvantages.
Potentially waste time travelling, costs more, missing a worker in their job
Advantages and disadvantages of training
Advantages
Should improve motivation and productivity, reputation of training staff can achieve goal quality candidates, reduces expenses in the long-term, reduces employee turnover.
Disadvantages.
Once trained employees may decide to leave, employees may be unavailable to the organisation for a long period of time, opportunity cost
what is an appraisal?
The formal assessment or evaluation of the performance of an employee over a particular time period in terms of meeting set objectives or performance targets
Things like punctuality, absenteeism, attitude, improvement etc may be discussed
Advantages and disadvantages of appraisals
Advantages
Increase motivation, employee can see where the improvements are needed, increase quality, increase productivity, employee is happier and knowing their role
Disadvantages.
Takes time potentially wasting time if conversation is not listen to, demotivation if the conversation is not supportive, increase pressure
What are the different types of appraisals on their benefits and drawbacks?
Management/superior assessment – involves the employees direct line manager conducting the appraisal. This means it's firsthand experience the manager knows the employee well however if there's a bad relationship between the employee and the manager it could have a negative effect.
Peer assessment –the process of having employees of a similar level of responsibility critically comment upon the performance of a coworker. This called me and there's a better relationship between the peers creating a more comfortable environment however it could cause tension between the peers and assessment may not be truthful if they are good friends.
Self assessment – process of having the employee critically reflect upon their own performance recording their progress suggesting new targets for the future. This mean employees can reflect on themselves. However, they may not be 100% truthful or too harsh.
360° feedback – involves the appraised staff member receiving feedback from the people whose views are considered helpful and relevant this could be from staff or other stakeholders who are in position to make judgement on performance. This means are many different opinions and feedback from different roles which eliminate potential bias however feedback might not be 100% for every individual and it takes time.
