Disease management

An ongoing process to keep disease levels manageable and below economic thresholds.

Disease control

The approach of total elimination of the disease problem, which is often not practical or necessary.

Economic threshold

The level of disease at which treatment will provide an economic return, making it cost-effective to manage the disease.

Accurate diagnosis

The first step to effective disease management, as symptoms of different diseases can be similar and management strategies can vary.

Integrated Disease Management (IDM)

The most effective strategy for long-term, sustained disease management, involving all possible management options.

Exclusion

A disease management concept that targets the pathogen component by preventing the introduction of pathogens through regulatory actions and the use of pathogen-free materials.

Avoidance

A disease management concept that targets the environment component by avoiding exposure to inoculum and favorable environmental conditions.

Eradication

A disease management concept that targets the pathogen component by eliminating pathogen inoculum through cultural practices, chemicals, and biological controls.

Protection

A disease management concept that targets the host component by protecting the host from infection through cultural practices, chemicals, and biological controls.
