Orthostatic Hypotension
A condition characterized by a reduction in systolic blood pressure of at least 20 mm Hg or diastolic pressure of at least 10 mm Hg upon standing.
Causes of Orthostatic Hypotension in SCI
It occurs due to loss of reflex vasoconstriction and pooling of blood in the lower extremities and abdominal viscera.
Close Monitoring of BP
Essential for patients with spinal cord injuries before, during, and after movement due to blood pressure instability.
Vasopressor
A medication that may be used to counteract profound vasodilation in patients with orthostatic hypotension.
Abdominal Binders
Used to encourage venous return and provide diaphragmatic support when the patient is upright.
Support Stockings
Applied to improve venous return in patients experiencing orthostatic hypotension.
Patients at Higher Risk for Orthostatic Hypotension
Individuals with lesions above T7 and those with tetraplegia are particularly susceptible.
Blood Pressure Instability Duration Post-Injury
Blood pressure may remain unstable for up to 2 weeks following a spinal cord injury.
