Olfaction
The sense of smell, which involves the olfactory pathway connecting to the hypothalamus and limbic system.
Hypothalamus
A region of the brain involved in various functions including emotion and the regulation of homeostasis.
Limbic system
A complex set of structures in the brain that deals with emotions and memory.
Auricle
The external part of the ear that collects sound waves.
Tympanic membrane
Also known as the eardrum, it vibrates in response to sound.
Ossicles
Three small bones in the middle ear that amplify sound waves.
Cochlea
A spiral-shaped structure in the inner ear that converts sound vibrations into nerve impulses.
Semicircular canals
Structures in the inner ear that are involved in maintaining balance and detecting rotational movement.
Utricle and saccule
Parts of the vestibular system that detect linear acceleration.
Vertigo
A sensation of spinning or dizziness, often caused by dysfunction of the semicircular canals.
External auditory canal
A tube that connects the outer ear to the tympanic membrane, channeling sound waves.
Auricular cartilage
Flexible cartilage that forms the shape of the auricle.
Eustachian tube
A tube that connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx, equalizing pressure in the ear.
Sound wave propagation
The movement of sound waves through air or other mediums, which is essential for hearing.
Acoustic reflex
An involuntary muscle contraction in response to loud sounds, protecting the inner ear.
Auditory nerve
The nerve that carries auditory sensory information from the cochlea to the brain.
Sound frequency
The pitch of a sound wave determined by the frequency of vibration, measured in Hertz (Hz).
Amplitude
The height of a sound wave that determines the loudness of the sound, measured in decibels (dB).
Auditory processing
The brain's ability to interpret and make sense of the sounds it hears.
Proprioception
The sense of the relative position of body parts, which is vital for balance and coordination.
Labyrinth
An intricate system of interconnected chambers within the inner ear, involved in hearing and balance.
