Sydney has low areas of multiple deprivation , high employment levels with above average income ($40,000). however there is some deprivation in the western suburbs.

Sydney has a beautiful attractive harbour and a warm climate which is attractive to people as a destination to live.

A successful places means more people moving the place for uni, Jobs (international migrants) - more people competing for homes - this causes prices to rise - and some current people there are priced out.

Around 2 million Jobs and average earnings around $200,000 with software developers and engineers being the biggest occupation.

What is inward migration like for the silicon valley?

Inward migration is still high in the silicon valley due to opportunities. around 10,000 per year (younger and educated). however there is an outflow of some us residents for cheaper housing.

What is multiple deprivation like in silicon valley?

Very high income very high education and low unemployment Palo Alto. East Palo Alto and some service-worker neighbourhoods are much poorer, next door to Silicon Valley. Food aid is still used at scale in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. That is your 4A.4c “perceptions differ inside the same successful region.”

There are shortages in construction workers health workers and education workers due to them not being able to afford property and also specialist tech / AI workers as firms are still competing globally.

Competitors from Asia eg in the car industry like Toyota compared to ford in Detroit made more desirable models and caused sales and revenue. (the rust belt used to be called steel belt but got downgraded to rust belt)

What did this lead to in Detroit?

This lead to high unemployment, high crime and less investment into public services. which meant that people had a low desposible income, people became depressed, some may turn to crime to generate income. causes a whole spiral of decline.

What did this lead to in terms of properties in Detroit?

Many were left abandoned.

business’ like shops were impacted too as people had no disposable income to spend there.

when people become depresses they had lower aspirations and didn’t do as well at school.

In 2013 the population was around 1000 people and many people lived in bad living conditions such as cabins and trailers.

Beattyville is one of USAs poorest areas with an average of income of around $10000 compared to an average around 50k, meaning that many families live below the poverty line.
