Hinges
Used to connect two objects together with a pivot on one edge, allowing doors, windows and lids to open and close.
Butt hinge
Standard hinge used for doors and windows. Needs rebating for a flush fit.
Butterfly hinge
Decorative hinge used in cabinet making and decorative boxes.
Concealed hinge
Used in kitchen cabinets and flat pack furniture.
Flush hinge
Small space saving hinge used for lightweight doors and boxes.
Piano or continuous hinge
Provides continuous support along the length of the opening such as large toy chests or piano lids.
Tee hinge
Surface mounted hinge often used on gates or shed doors.
Lamination
Plywood is a manufactured material made from thin layers or veneers of wood laid at right angles to each other, glued and heat pressed to create a strong composite.
Laminated timber
Made from strips of wood, layered and bonded together with a strong adhesive, producing a strong timber used for load bearing structures.
Oil
Soaks into the timber, providing protection and some water resistance while replenishing a wood's natural oils.
Stain
Permanently stains wood; the colour can be affected by the base wood but does not protect.
Paint
Applied with a brush or roller, usually needs a primer or undercoat on bare wood, giving a colour finish and adding protection against weathering.
Varnish
Transparent finish that enhances the natural grain of the timber and protects from moisture.
Wax
A thin layer applied to enhance the natural colour and give a deep shine, helping to protect wood from moisture.
Wood preservative
Protects wood from fungal or insect attack and helps prevent rot and decay.
