Cohen- status frustration- study on Wc boys- they face anomie in the MC school system- suffer from cultural dep and lack the skills to achieve- they resolve their frustrations by rejecting mainstream Mc values and turn to subcultures

Cloward and Ohlin

Cloward and Ohlin- 3 subcultures- not everyone in WC situation adapts to it by running innovation- utilitarian crimes

Different subcultures respond in different ways: criminal, conflict and retreatist subcultures 

Eval: they draw boundaries too sharply, assume everyone starts sharing the same mainstream goal

Miller

Miller- deviance arises from attempt to achieve their own goals rather than mainstream ones

Eval: mainstream goals put pressure on people leading to deviance to achieve them 

Messner and Rosenfield

Messner and Rosenfield- obsession with money and success and winner takes all mentality of the American dream puts pressure toward crime that encourages an anomie cultural environment 

Eval: Not everyone believes in the American dream
