The scientific study of food consumption and the use of nutrients in the body

Health

A person’s physical and mental condition

Malnutrition

A condition that occurs when one or more nutrients are not present in the correct amounts in the diet

Overnutrition

A condition that occurs when an individual’s diet contains an excess of one or more nutrients

Undernutrition

A condition that occurs when an individual’s diet is lacking in one or more nutrients

Incidence

The rate of new or newly diagnosed cases of a disease - “The incidence is increasing“

Prevalence

The total number or proportion of a population who have a disease or health condition - “the disease is very prevalent“

Economic cost (direct and indirect)

Direct economic cost: money required to pay for treatment for health conditions

Indirect economic cost: loss of productivity when an individual is unable to work due to health conditions

Expenditure

The amount of money spent or the amount of energy used “expenditure is high …“

Physical cost

The symptoms, complications, pains and distress caused by diseases/disorders
