Physical Educators aim to develop the whole person through movement experiences. The major goals are organized into three domains of learning:
Psychomotor Domain
Focuses on physical movement and motor skill development.
Examples:
Throwing, catching, dribbling
Fitness improvement
Coordination and balance
Cognitive Domain
Focuses on knowledge and understanding.
Examples:
Learning rules and strategies of sports
Understanding fitness concepts
Knowing safety procedures
Affective Domain
Focuses on emotions, attitudes, and social behaviors.
Examples:
Teamwork
Respect and sportsmanship
What are the components of a High-Quality Physical Education Program?

Standards-based curriculum
Instruction appropriate for all students
Adequate instructional time
Safe and supportive learning environment
Assessment of student learning
Promotion of lifelong physical activity
Inclusive activities for all skill levels
Sequential skill development
Fitness education and wellness concepts
What is the difference between the curriculum and instructional formats?
Curriculum:
what is taught
includes goals, content, and learning outcomes
provides a plan for learning
Example: volleyball unit with objectives and standards
Instructional formats
how its taught
teaching methods and lesson organization
provides delivery strategies
Example: stations, cooperative learning, sport education models
What is the difference between formative and summative assessment?
Formative
occurs during learning
used to improve instruction
provides feedback
informal or ongoing
Summative
occurs after learning
used to evaluate final achievement
measures mastery
formal evaluation
Examples of Formative assessment
Teacher observation
Exit tickets
Skill checklists
Example of summative assessment
Final fitness test
Unit exam
Performance rubric at the end of a unit
Who developed the National Standards for Physical Education and what is the purpose?
The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America) developed the National Standards for Physical Education.
What is the purpose of National Standards for Physical Education?
Purpose
The standards provide guidance for what students should know and be able to do in physical education. They help ensure students become physically literate and active for life.
