Lymph Node Examination
A physical examination that assesses the lymph nodes as part of the general and specific evaluations of patients.
General Examination
The overall assessment of a patient, which includes the evaluation of lymph nodes among other systems.
Lymphadenopathy
Enlargement of lymph nodes, often indicating underlying conditions such as infection or malignancy.
Cervical lymph nodes
Groups of lymph nodes located in the neck, including submental, submandibular, tonsillar, and others.
Axillary lymph nodes
Groups of lymph nodes found in the axilla (armpit), including anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral groups.
Inguinal lymph nodes
Superficial lymph nodes located in the groin area, organized into horizontal and vertical chains.
Inspection
A method of examination that involves visually assessing the lymph nodes for signs of enlargement or abnormalities.
Palpation
A technique used in physical examination where the physician feels the lymph nodes to assess their size, consistency, and tenderness.
Benign lymph nodes
Lymph nodes that appear smooth, rounded, non-tender, and mobile, often indicating a non-cancerous process.
Malignant lymph nodes
Lymph nodes that are hard, firm, irregular, and often fixed in place, suggesting the possibility of cancer.
IPPA Sequence
A methodical approach to local examination, which stands for Inspection, Palpation, Percussion, and Auscultation.
CCSS SLMNO
A mnemonic used to describe the characteristics of lymph node masses: Consistency, Size, Shape, Surface, Cutaneous Changes, Location, Mobility, Number, and Organization.
