In the wider text, Uncle Philip's workshop, where he constructs puppets and mechanical toys, is the novel's central metaphor for the provider's power over those he funds: he fabricates bodies and animates them according to his will, and the financial dependency of the Jowles makes them subject to the same authorial control.

In Chapter 4, Uncle Philip compels Melanie to perform as Leda in his staging of the myth, making the provider's power as absolute as the power of an author over characters they script. Margaret, his wife, is mute throughout the novel, her silence is a literal image of what patriarchal financial authority does to those it controls.

The burning of the toyshop at the novel's close destroys Uncle Philip's property and his power simultaneously, and Melanie and Finn emerge into "a dream of beginnings". While they have escaped the provider's house, they have inherited nothing to replace its structure.

What the global issue identifies as corrupted (the relationship between provider and dependent), is not restored by the removal of the provider. Both texts leave this unanswered.
