Divine Inspiration
The gift of the Holy Spirit which assisted the human authors in writing the Bible to ensure it contained the truths God wanted us to know.
Sacred Scripture
The word of God written by humans acting under the Holy Spirit's inspiration and guidance; another name for the Bible.
Gospel
A word that means "Good News." This message is the Good News of God's Kingdom and His saving love.
Canon of Scripture
The Church's complete list of inspired books included in Sacred Scripture.
Conscience
The God-given ability that helps us judge right from wrong.
Epistle
A letter.
Evangelists
The four inspired human authors of the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Salvation
The loving action of God's forgiveness of sins and restoration of friendship between God and his People.
Faith
The belief in God, and in all that God has revealed and said.
Revere
To feel deep respect for something.
Reflect
To think deeply; to ponder.
Wisdom
The spiritual gift that helps us see God's purpose and plan for our lives.
Fulfillment
The achievement of something desired.
Liturgy of the Word
The first part of the mass that focuses on scripture, reflection, and prayer.
Proclaim
To publicly announce the gospel as the core message of salvation to bring others the faith.
Virtue
The habit and disposition to do good and consistently choose right actions.
Discern
To perceive or recognize something; the process of seeking God's will.
King David
A great leader of Israel who is credited with writing most of the Psalms.
Isaiah
A prophet from the Old Testament who foretold of the Messiah's coming.
Holy Spirit
The third person of the Trinity who inspires the authors of the Gospel.
Abraham
The founder of a new nation who was called by God to leave his own country and people and journey to an undesignated land.
St. Paul
A persecutor of Christians who became a promoter of Christianity and wrote many epistles.
John
The Evangelist who focuses on spiritual things, the relationship with God's love, and how people misunderstand Jesus while He teaches the truth.
Luke
The Evangelist who focuses on practical, ordinary things so people will be open to Christ's message of salvation.
Jesus
The Savior of the World and the living Word through which all other words get their meaning; the New Testament is written about Him.
Matthew
The Evangelist who wrote for a Jewish audience and stressed that Jesus, the Messiah, is the fulfillment of the Old Testament and the new covenant.
Mark
The Evangelist who stresses the announcement of God's Kingdom and explains how the disciples gradually came to understand and proclaim Christ.
Literal Sense
A method of interpreting scripture that involves the actual words and the culture, time, and place in which they were written.
Spiritual Sense
A method of interpreting scripture that includes subcategories such as the moral sense, the allegorical sense, and the anagogical sense.
Old Testament
A collection of 46 books that tell about God's relationship with Abraham and his descendants and point toward the salvation brought through Jesus.
