First sign of NA unity. Fought to end reservations+intergrate NAs into society. Resulted in establishment of the Indian Claims Commission, a gvmt body to aid in return of Indian lams

What was the National Indian Youth Council (NIYC)?

Established in 1961 with the initial aim of protecting NA fishing rights in the north west. Then took on lawsuits to protect treaty rights, voting rights and religious freedom

What was American Indian Movement? (AIM)

Established in 1968, this was a more militant group that wanted quicker progress in the gaining of rights

What was Red Power?

Term taken directly from ‘Black Power’. Movement took pride in NA race and culture

What was the significance of the establishment of AIM?

It was established with the need to address high unemployment, poor housing and lack of education for NAs, particularly in urban areas
