Environmental Management
Concerned with the impacts of human activity on the environment.
Sustainability
The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Photo-synthesis
The process by which plants synthesize glucose using carbon dioxide, water and energy from sunlight.
Ecosystem
A community of living organisms and their interactions with their environment.
Biotic Factors
Living components of an ecosystem that affect living organisms.
Abiotic Factors
Non-living physical and chemical elements in the ecosystem that affect living organisms.
Population Density
The number of individuals living in a given area, calculated as population divided by area.
Carbon Cycle
The cycle through which carbon is exchanged between the different spheres of the Earth.
Greenhouse Effect
The process by which certain gases trap heat in the atmosphere, maintaining the Earth's temperature.
Acid Deposition
A mix of air pollutants that deposit from the atmosphere as acidic wet or dry deposition.
Ozone Layer
A layer in the stratosphere that absorbs most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation.
Climate Change
Long-term changes in temperature and typical weather patterns in a place.
Food Security
When all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food.
Energy Security
The reliable availability of energy resources at an affordable price.
Waste Management
The collection, transport, processing, recycling, and disposal of waste materials.
Water Security
The ability to access sufficient quantities of clean water to maintain adequate standards of health.
Biodiversity
The variety and variability of life on Earth, including the variety of species.
Population Pyramids
A graphical representation of the age and sex distribution of a population.
Lincoln Index
A method for estimating wildlife populations based on mark-recapture data.
Simpson's Index of Diversity
A measure used to quantify the biodiversity of a habitat.
Troposphere
The lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere where most weather occurs.
Stratosphere
The second layer of Earth's atmosphere above the troposphere, containing the ozone layer.
