Beatitudes
Blessings stated by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, outlining the attitudes and characteristics of those who are blessed by God. Examples include: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." and "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."
Narrow Gate
The concept that the path to righteousness and eternal life is difficult and requires commitment to God's will, contrasting with the easier, destructive path.
Wide Gate
The easier path in life, which leads to destruction and is often chosen by many, contrary to the path of righteousness.
Lust
An intense longing or desire, often sexual, which can objectify individuals and harm relationships; Jesus taught that even looking at someone with lust is adultery in the heart.
Temptations of Jesus
Three tests Jesus faced in the desert after 40 days of fasting: 1. Turning stone into bread (temptation of physical need/power over creation). 2. Worshiping Satan in exchange for all the kingdoms of the world (temptation of worldly power and glory). 3. Throwing himself off the temple to prove God's protection (temptation to test God or seek glory frivolously). Jesus responded to each with scripture.
Eye for an Eye
A principle of justice from Exodus implying that punishment should be proportionate to the offense. Jesus, however, taught to 'not resist an evil person' but to 'turn the other cheek,' advocating for non-retaliation and love for enemies.
Divorce and Remarriage
Jesus' teaching that marriage is a lifelong union not to be dissolved by human intervention, except for marital unfaithfulness, and that remarriage after an unbiblical divorce constitutes adultery.
Fasting
A spiritual discipline of abstaining from food for a period of prayer and seeking God, as exemplified by Jesus' 40 days in the desert. Jesus taught that fasting should be done sincerely for God, not for human recognition.
Law and Prophets
Refers to the Old Testament teachings that Jesus affirmed, stating He came to fulfill them, not abolish them, by providing their true meaning and spirit.
Prayer Responses
The three possible responses from God: yes, not right now, or I have something better planned. This concept encourages trust in God's will and timing.
Do Not Worry
A teaching from Jesus encouraging focus on what is within one's control and trusting in God's provision for daily needs, using examples like birds and lilies to illustrate God's care, thus alleviating anxiety.
