Simple Past Tense
Used to talk about finished actions that happened in the past.
Time Markers
Words that indicate when an action took place, such as 'yesterday,' 'last,' 'ago,' and 'when.'
Regular Verbs
Verbs that form the past tense by adding -ed to the base verb.
Irregular Verbs
Verbs that do not follow the regular pattern when forming the past tense.
The Be Verb
A special kind of irregular verb, with past forms 'was' and 'were.'
Positive Sentence Pattern (Regular Verbs)
Base verb + -ed (e.g., 'I walked').
Negative Sentence Pattern
Did not/didn't + base verb (e.g., 'He did not study').
Question Pattern
Did + subject + base verb (e.g., 'Did you go?').
CVC Pattern Rule
For verbs ending in a consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pattern, double the final consonant before adding -ed.
Examples of Time Markers
Common examples include 'yesterday,' 'last,' 'two months ago,' and 'when.'
Wh- Question Pattern
Wh- word + did + subject + base verb (e.g., 'When did you leave?').
Regular Verb Examples
Include verbs like 'talked,' 'worked,' 'tried,' which follow the -ed rule.
Irregular Verb Examples
Include past forms like 'went' for 'go,' 'saw' for 'see,' and 'ate' for 'eat.'
Past Tense of 'Be' Verb
'Was' is used with singular subjects, and 'were' is used with plural subjects.
