Nationalism

feelings of devotion and pride in one's country/national group. putting your country's interest over the interest of other nations.

Imperialism

conquering other people/territories for gaining economic resources and political power

British Raj

The name for the British government's military rule of India (means British Rule)

Opium War

Britain tried to smuggle opium into China, China destroyed it, Britain responded with military. Resulted in 5 Chinese ports open to British trade, and no more isolationism

Meiji Restoration

the modernization and industrialization of Japan in the 1800's, Japanese emperor returned to power

Social Darwinism

certain nations/groups are more "fit" and they should rule the "less fit"

"White Man's Burden"

A poem by British poet Rudyard Kipling commenting on American imperialism. It created a phrase used by imperialists to justify the imperialistic actions the U.S. took.

Berlin Conference

meeting to divide African territory for European powers to create colonies and make rules on occupation (without any African leaders present at the conference)
