Mate Choice
- important cause of sexual selection = process through which males and females attempt to maximize their chances of reproductive success
- causes variations in individual fitness, speciation, and evolution of extreme traits
Mate Preference and Choosiness
2 Components of Mate Choices
Mate Preference
- ranking of prospective mates = collect as much information as possible on the identity and quality of available mate candidates
Choosiness
- effort invested in mate assessment = direct and indirect benefits, such as parental care, gene quality for the offspring, or access to a high-quality territory
pass favorable genes
build a stable, supportive partnerships conducive to survival and reproduction
How do humans choose a mate?
Assortative Mating
Non-assortative Mating
Types of Non-Random Mating
non-random process
= choose mates based on specific traits, behaviors, or preferences
Assortative Mating
occurs when individuals with similar traits mate more frequently
increases the frequency of certain traits
it can lead to homogenous populations
Disassortative Mating
individuals prefer mates with different traits
increases genetic diversity
avoid inbreeding
Men
drawn to signs of fertility and youth, such as physical attractiveness and reproductive potential = continuation of their genes into future generations
Women
prioritize resources, status, and stability in a mate, as these traits provide greater security and support for raising offspring → connected to parental investment theory = parent (usually the mother) who invests more in offspring will be more selective when choosing a mate
