Gestation
Period of time that a female is pregnant; 'the act of carrying or being carried'.
Eutherian mammals
Mammals with a placenta.
Implantation
Attachment of placental membranes to the endometrium.
Placenta
Endocrine organ of metabolic interchange between the conceptus and dam.
Parturition
Giving birth to young; initiated by the fetus.
Chorionic villus
Functional unit of fetal placenta, utilized for exchange; small finger-like projections to increase surface area.
Diffuse placenta
Found in pigs; closely spaced chorionic villi distribution over the entire chorion.
Zonary placenta
Found in dogs and cats; exchange occurs only around the chorion near the middle of the conceptus.
Cotyledonary placenta
Found in ruminants; many discrete button-like structures (cotyledons) for nutrient exchange.
Epitheliochorial
Placental classification with 6 layers between fetal and maternal blood.
Endotheliochorial
Placental classification with 5 layers between fetal and maternal blood.
Hemochorial
Placental classification with 3 layers between fetal and maternal blood.
Progesterone
Hormone that maintains pregnancy, plays a crucial role during gestation.
Dystocia
Difficult birth, usually occurs during stage 2 of parturition.
Superovulation
Increasing the number of oocytes released.
Cryopreservation
Freezing sperm to prolong its viability.
Artificial Insemination (AI)
Putting semen into a straw and inserting it into the female.
Transgenesis
Genetically modifying by adding genome, DNA, and RNA for specific characteristics.
Ultrasonography
Using sound waves through a monitor to diagnose conditions including pregnancy.
In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
Putting an oocyte and sperm together in a liquid and allowing them to combine.
Embryo Transfer (ET)
Transfer of embryos to a surrogate to carry the pregnancy.
In-Vitro Embryo Production (IVEP)
Producing embryos in a petri dish.
