Tres aberant noctes
Three nights were needed
Ut cornua tota coirent
For the horns of the moon to come together completely
efficerentque orbem
And make the orb
Postquam plenissima fulsit
After the moon shone most fully
Et solida terras spectavit imagine luna
And saw the earth with a solid image
Egreditur tectis vestes induta recinctas
She went out of the palace dressed in loosened clothes
Nuda pedem, nudos umeris infusa capillos
Barefoot, after letting her loose hair pour on her shoulders
Fertque vagos mediae
And she carried her wandering steps, unaccompanied
Per muta silentia noctis incomitata gradus
Through the silent stillnesses of midnight
Nomines volucresque ferasque solverat alta quies
Deep sleep had loosed men and birds and wild animals
Nullo cum murmure saepes
The hedgerows [were] with no murmur
Inmotaeque silent frondes, silet umidus aer
And the unmoving leaves were silent, the damp air was silent
Sidera sola micant
Only the stars shone
Ad quae sua bracchia tendens
To the stars holding out her arms
Ter se convertit, ter sumptis flumine crinem inroravit
She turned herself around, she sprinkled herself three times with water
Aquis ternisque ululatibus ora solvit
She loosened her mouth with threefold wailing
Et in dura submisso poplite terra
And with bended knee on the hard ground, she said:
