Kidney
Bean-shaped
Kidney
Any type of organ needs blood vessels for blood supply.
Kidney
Bones are organ
Retroperitoneal
behind the abdomen
Renal Capsule
surrounds each kidney. Outer lining of the kidney
Renal Sinus
Opening from the hilium which contains blood vessels
renal artery and vein
Provide the kidney’s blood supply
Nephron
functional unit of kidney
Bowman's Capsule
Double-walled chamber
Glomerulus
tuft of capillaries that resemble ball of yarn.
podocytes
specialized cell found in kidney
Arcuate Arteries
arch between the cortex and medulla
Afferent artirole
Supplies blood to the glomerulus for filtration
Efferent Arteriole
Transports the filtered blood away from the glomerous
Vasa Recta
specialized peritubular capillaries that surrounds the loop of Henle and collecting ducts.
filtration
Occurs when blood pressure non selectively forces water and other small molecules out of glomerular capillaries and into the Bowman's capsule, forming a fluid called filtrate.
Tubular Reabsorption
as the filtrate flows to the Bowman's capsule through Proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule, and collecting duct, many of the solutes filtrate are reabsorbed.
Tubular Secretion
by product that is highly toxic to kidney if it is in high concentration are secreted into the nephron from peritubular capillaries.
Ureters
small tubes that carry urine from the renal pelvis to the posterior inferior portion of the urinary bladder.
Urinary bladder
is a hollow, muscular, container that lies in the pelvic cavity just posterior to the pubic symphysis. It stores urine up to maximum 1000mL of urine.
Urethra
tube that carries urine from the urinary bladder to the outside of the body.
