Sumner emphasizes scientific approach to studying social relationships—> societies ONLY evovled through competiton best groups/individuals coming out strongest(pully yourself up by the bootstraps mentality)

Ward: writes with sumner in mind and does agree with darwinism (natural selection and individual comp) but ALSO involves cooperative approach to social development —> easy to say pull yourself up by the bootstraps when you cant do it yourself
