What is a healthy diet?
A balanced diet that includes a range of food, doesn't include sugar, fat and salt.
Why does a balanced diet not include high intakes of sugar, fats and salt?
as they can cause serious problems with high intakes.
What are some healthy eating guidelines?
1. Five portions of a variety of fruit and veg. 2. Starchy carbohydrates consisting of 1/3 of your meal. 3. Eat less processed meats and choose leaner cuts 4. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day.
Why do we need our ‘5 a day’?
They provide vitamins and fibres which are needed for your body to function properly.

What is a calorie?
A unit of energy found in food and drinks.
What are the three groups of carbohydrates?
Sugar 2. Starch 3. Dietary fibre
What is dietary fibre?
Natural sugars as well as fibre. It also prevents constipation.
What are some causes of obesity?
over eating, not enough exercise
What are macronutrients?
Nutrients that are needed in large amounts. Protein, fats and carbohydrates.
What are micronutrients?
Nutrients needed in small amounts. Vitamins and minerals.
What is high biological value protein?
contain all of the essential amino acids, come from (animals) meat, fish and (plants) quinoa or soya beans.
What is low biological value protein?
Misses one of the essential amino acids, comes from (plants) beans, lentils etc.
What do carbohydrates do?
Needed for energy
Why do we need dietary fibre?
Prevents diabetes, bowel cancer and coronary heart disease.
What are the types of fat?
Animal fat
Vegetable fats
What are two types of vitamins?
Soluble vitamins
Insoluble vitamins
