Aim

Procudure
40 male americans.
Teacher (ppt), learner, experimenter.
administrate shocks whenever learner made an error (up to 450V)
Prods: to get learner to carry on administrating shocks.
Findings
100% went up to 300V
5 ppt stopped at 300V
65% went up to 450V
ppt showed discomfort and distress
conclusions
conformity continued even when ppt knew they were causing harm.
Strength
Research to support: French television show did same experiment and findings showed 80% of ppt went up to 460V
Limitations
Unethical: prods used caused psychological harm and ppt showed physical distress.
Low ecological validity: laboratory setting used which could Orne and holland found doesnt reflect real life setting. Could affect obedience and not be generalised.
