What are the seven steps in the scientific method?
Observe/Questions
Background Research
Form a hypothesis
Collaborate
Design and perform an experiment
Gather and Analyze Data
Form conclusions
Hypothesis
Identify a specific and testable explanation for some phenomenon. An educated guess.
Null Hypothesis
The opposite of your hypothesis.
Independent variable
The factor that you are manipulating or testing (difference between control and experimental groups)
Dependent variable
The factor that is measured or expected to change from the independent variable
Control
Group that does not receive any treatment or is not manipulated. Typically a baseline or natural state of something.
Experimental
The group that is being manipulated or is receiving a particular treatment.
Variability/Repetition
Sample size: The number of individuals being tested in the experiment
– Statistics: Helps you determine if the results are you are seeing are random events or valid results due to your manipulation
– Repeatability: Is your experiment designed and written in a way that it can be repeated to show the same results (by you and others)?
