Nonsuccedaneous
A term describing permanent teeth that do not replace any primary teeth, such as the permanent mandibular molars.
Mandibular Molars
The largest and strongest teeth in the mandibular arch, totaling 6 teeth with the universal numbers 17, 18, 19, 30, 31, and 32.
Bifurcated
Having two roots (mesial and distal), which is a characteristic feature of mandibular molars.
Mandibular First Molar
Teeth numbers 19 and 30 that erupt at 6-7 years and are the widest teeth mesiodistally of any permanent tooth.
Buccal Pit
A feature of the mandibular first molar that is highly susceptible to caries as it retains plaque biofilm.
Pentagonal
The five-sided crown outline shape of a mandibular first molar when viewed from the occlusal aspect.
Distal lingual Cusp
The smallest of the five functioning cusps on a mandibular first molar, which helps distinguish right from left.
Cusp Size Hierarchy (Mandibular First Molar)
The order of cusps from largest to smallest: MB, ML, DL, DB, and distal.
Mandibular Second Molar
Teeth numbers 18 and 31 that erupt at 11-12 years and possess four cusps of nearly equal size.
Cross-shaped groove pattern
The pattern that divides the occlusal table of a mandibular second molar into nearly 4 equal parts.
Transverse Ridges
Formed by the triangular ridges of the MB and ML cusps or the DB and DL cusps meeting; the mandibular second molar has two of these.
Mandibular Third Molar
Teeth numbers 17 and 32 that erupt at 17-21 years and often exhibit no standard form.
Crenulated
A term used to describe the wrinkled appearance of the occlusal surface of a mandibular third molar due to an excess of supplemental grooves and pits.
Rhomboidal
The four-sided crown outline shape of a mandibular molar when viewed from the proximal aspect.
Dentigerous Cysts
A clinical implication or condition that may be associated with mandibular third molars.
