Cerebellum – where is it located?
Posterior cranial fossa
behind the brain stem
below occipital lobes of cerebral hemispheres.
What separates cerebellum from cerebral hemispheres?
Tentorium cerebelli (lamina of dura mater).
Cerebellum – gross structure?
Vermis → median narrow strip
Two cerebellar hemispheres → lateral expansions flanking the vermis.
Cerebellum – two surfaces?
Superior surface
Inferior surface → vermis lies in a deep hollow called the vallecula.
Where are cerebellar peduncles located?
In the anterior part of the inferior surface.
Horizontal fissure – what does it mark?
Boundary between superior and inferior surfaces.
Start near middle cerebellar peduncles
extend around lateral and posterior borders
Three pairs of cerebellar peduncles?
Inferior cerebellar peduncle (restiform body)
Middle cerebellar peduncle (brachium pontis)
Superior cerebellar peduncle (brachium conjunctivum).
Cerebellum surface – what does it present?
Numerous fissures separating the folia.
→ narrow, leaf like
Primary fissure – what does it separate?
Anterior lobe from posterior lobe.
Posterolateral fissure – what does it separate?
Posterior lobe from flocculonodular lobe.
Horizontal fissure – characteristic?
Greatest circumferential extent.
