Race
A social construct that is use to place ppl into categories based on physical traits (ex: skin color or hair texture), which inherited through genetics .
Ethnicity
A shared culture heritage. looks into ancestors, Language and religion
One-Drop rule
The belief that if someone has at least one black ancestor , regardless of how many generations far back , they were labeled as black even if their appearance stated otherwise
Contact Hypothesis
Theory states that interacting with ppl who differ from ourselves and our usual environment lowers negative attitudes that we may have abt them
racial formation
A process that created racial categories inhibited, adjusted or destroyed
Prejudice
Preconceived , unjustified and generalized judgement of a group/category of ppl
Sterotype
The unreliable generalization or beliefs abt all members of a group
Implicit bias
The automatic and unconscious place of value and or association (pos or neg) with groups, subgroups or characteristics of ppl
Discrimination
The unequal treatment of various categories of ppl
Racism
personal prejudice on the part of an individual that demeans others and supports racial inequality (micro-level) or a form of racial hierarchy that guides the actions of an organization or societal institution to the benefit of some and disadvantage of others (macro-level)
Color-blind racism
When race neutral principles bring forth a racially unequal status quo
Minority group
A subordinate group whose members, even tho they represent a numeric majority are lacking access to and control over valued resources in society
Genocide
The systemic killing of nation, religious, racial or ethnic group with the intent to destroy the entity of that group of ppl
Expulsion
The systemic removal of a group of ppl from society
Amalgamation
The process in which a majority group and minority group combine and form a new group
Assimilation
A process where a person forsakes their usual cultural traditions to blend into/ become apart of a different culture
Pluralism
Mutual respect another’s culture among the various groups in society allowing minorities to express their own cultures w/o experiencing prejudice
Symbolic ethnicity
An ethnic identity that puts an emphasis on ethnic food and or political issues rather than deeper ties to a persons ethnic heritage
