Nasal cavity
The part of the respiratory system that lies behind the external nose and is divided by the midline septum.
Vibrissae
The nose hairs that filter coarse particles from the air.
Olfactory mucosa
The part of the nasal cavity that contains smell receptors.
Respiratory mucosa
A type of mucous membrane in the nasal cavity that has ciliated columnar epithelium and secretes mucus for trapping dust and bacteria.
Epistaxis
The medical term for a nosebleed.
Paranasal sinuses
The hollow spaces in the skull around the nasal cavity that help to lighten the skull and humidify the air.
Coanae
The three openings in the nasal cavity, divided into superior, middle, and inferior.
Uvula
A soft appendage hanging at the back of the throat that helps close off the nasopharynx during swallowing.
Pharyngotympanic tube
Also known as the Eustachian tube, it connects the nasopharynx to the middle ear.
Nasopharynx
The section of the pharynx located behind the nasal cavity, functioning solely as an air passage.
Oropharynx
The part of the pharynx located behind the oral cavity.
Laryngopharynx
The lower part of the pharynx that connects to the larynx and esophagus.
Sinus resonance
The property of the paranasal sinuses that helps to amplify the sound of the voice.
