Dissertation
A long, research-based work, perhaps 10,000–15,000words, written for a degree or diploma.
Thesis
A very long, original, research-based work, perhaps 80,000–100,000words, written for a higher degree such as a PhD.
Plagiarism
A serious academic offence involving the use of other people’s work as if it were your own.
Rote-learning
A method of learning based purely on repetition.
Mnemonics
Tricks or techniques that help a person remember information, such as using 'i' before 'e' except after 'c' for spelling.
Selective schooling
An education system where pupils are chosen for entry based on academic reasons or the parents' ability to pay fees.
Comprehensive schooling
An education system where everyone enters without exams and tuition is free and government-funded.
League tables
Lists that rank schools or colleges from best to worst based on exam results and other specific criteria.
Two-tier system
A system resulting in two separate levels of quality, where one level is considered better than the other.
Bursary
Money provided to help pay for studies, typically awarded based on the student's financial need.
Tertiary education
Education provided at the university or college level.
Numeracy
The basic ability to count and perform mathematical calculations.
Fast-paced environment
A working or social setting where things happen very quickly.
Benefits package
All the extra advantages a company offers in addition to a salary, such as healthcare plans or pensions.
Shortlisted
Being selected from a larger group of applicants to be considered for an interview or position.
Notice period
The amount of time an employee must continue to work after indicating they are leaving their current job.
Opposite number
A person who has the same rank or performs the same job as you but in a different office, branch, or organization.
Hot-desking
An office policy where desks are shared and employees sit at whichever workstation is free on a given day.
Work–life balance
The relationship between the amount of time spent at work and the time spent on enjoyable personal activities.
Skeleton staff
The minimum number of workers required to keep an operation or organization functioning.
Loss leader
An item sold by a store for less than its cost to attract customers who may then purchase more profitable goods.
Niche market
A specialized group of customers with specific interests that a company aims to serve.
Red tape
A negative term referring to complex official rules and bureaucracy that result in delays.
Chauvinistic
A personality trait involving excessive or blind patriotism regarding one's own country.
Scrawny
An adjective describing someone as unattractively thin and bony-looking.
Unkempt
Describing an appearance that is untidy, messy, or scruffy.
Sallow
A descriptor for a skin complexion that appears yellowish and unhealthy.
Taciturn
A personality trait describing someone who is reserved and says very little.
Conceited
A negative trait for a person who thinks themselves wonderful or superior.
Besotted
To be romantically obsessed or almost blindly in love with someone.
